The use of IUDs Reduce Risk of Cervical Cancer

Spiral type intrauterine device or IUD (intra-uterine devices) are not only function as a contraceptive. There are other benefits that can be obtained when using this type kotrasepsi.

As reported by the NY Daily News, a study published in the journal The Lancet Oncology found that IUD use reduces the risk of cervical cancer by half. This compared with women who never used contraceptive IUD.

Study involving 20 thousand women are found, the IUD provides protection to the lining of the uterus, against cancer cells. But the data related to cervical cancer or cervical used in this study mixed with cervical cancer data.

Xavier Catellsague, researchers from L'Hospitalet de Llobregat in Catalonia, Spain and his team then analyzed data from 10 studies of cervical cancer and 16 studies related to the prevalence of infection with HPV (Human Papilloma Virus), the virus that causes cervical cancer.

Known, the use of IUDs have no effect on the risk of HPV exposure. However, making significant protection against developing two types of cervical cancer cells, which most often occur. Namely squamous-cell carcinoma, a cancer that occurs in areas outside of the cervix. The use of an IUD can reduce the risk by 44 percent.

Other types of cervical cancers are adenocarcinoma. This cancer develops from the glandular mucus-producing cells of the cervix. By using the IUD, the researchers found the risk of adenocarcinoma could be reduced by 54 percent.
